Joseph Vallot (1854-1925) was a botanist, geologist, meteorologist, physiologist, and glaciologist all in one. This singular man, full of humour and kindness, imbued with immense faith in science and progress, sacrificed a good part of his fortune, his health, and forty years of his life to the study of the Mont Blanc massif, at a time when ascents to high peaks were an adventure and the boundary between mountaineering and science was porous.
