Summary

The history of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix is integral to that of mountaineering and the valley where it was born. For 200 years, the many challenges taken on by guides have cemented the legendary status of their organisation. Today, they are the protagonists in a changing mountain landscape.

Their heritage puts them at the heart of the issue, and holds the potential solutions to the longevity and sustainability of their profession. The solid foundations of their history and strong values stand them in good stead to face the challenges of today’s changing environment.

The choice of the festival

It is not easy to tackle the 200-year history of a mountain institution: the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix. Pierre Cadot and Thomas Guerrin, the renowned duo from Yucca Films, have taken up the challenge. Over a backdrop of stunning images, the story is told through poignant testimonies from several generations of guides. Illustrated with clever animation for the historical sequences, the film takes us on a journey through the story of an extraordinary profession loyal to the ideals of freedom and solidarity.
