Summary

150 years after the ascent of the Matterhorn by Lucy Walker, the first woman to achieve this feat, Marie-France Hendrikx, historian and mountain enthusiast, decides to investigate this largely unknown English woman – one of the pioneers of mountaineering. She revisits Walker’s climb of the Matterhorn, in the same conditions and in period clothing.

The choice of the festival

On 22 July 1871, an English climber stood at the top of the Matterhorn, only 6 years after the first (and tragic) ascent by Whymper and Michel Croz. Lucy Walker was not regarded as a heroine by everyone. Some found it shameful that a woman in a skirt should succeed where so many men had failed! 150 years later, historian (and mountain enthusiast) Marie-France Hendrikx follows in the footsteps of the British pioneer. With the same equipment (including skirts), she tells the story of Lucy’s destiny and that of the first female climbers.
